According to the National Stroke Association of Malaysia (NASAM), Stroke is the third largest cause of deaths in Malaysia. The word “stroke” itself strongly implies that no one is ever prepared for this sudden, often tragic event. However, the primary concern for the individual who suffered from a stroke is the risk of long-term adult disability. Many people are uncertain about coping with caring for a stroke survivor at home. The road to recovery for a stroke survivor is never easy and it requires a network of support, but it is not impossible.
There is no certainty on how the human brain compensates for the damage caused by a stroke. Cases on the damage inflicted on the brain cells varies with each individuals. Common problems include:
It is not unheard of for a stroke survivor to experience remarkable and unanticipated recoveries but it is a challenge to determine the extent of damage after a brain attack
Early rehabilitation is crucial. The sooner rehabilitation takes place, the faster the brain relearns normal movements.
Rehabilitation seeks to improve the survivor’s functionality as independently as possible. Just as each stroke may affect a person differently, the types of rehabilitation needed will differ from person to person. The important aspect to note is that the survivor will require a system of group support so they can help themselves. This must be accomplished in a way that preserves dignity and motivate the survivor to relearn basic skills that the stroke might have impaired such as bathing, eating, dressing and walking.
To aid a survivor with their stroke recovery goals, the rehabilitation program will be planned by a team of professionals. The team may include some of the following:
In conjunction with World Stroke Day 2016, Ara Damansara Medical Centre hosted a Neuro Rehabilitation Day to celebrate the survivors of stroke treated at the hospital. The Neuro Rehabilitation Day consist of a series of activities for the public, showcasing the many unique rehabilitation activities that are used daily to help survivors on their road to recovery. Participants took part in games such as archery and bowling, enhanced by the hydrotherapy pool, Alter G (anti-gravity) machine for easier mobility and less pain, automated hoist for easier elevation and movement, and Armeo Tilt table to assist immobile patients with movement.
The ADMC’s Rehabilitation Centre is equipped with automated rehabilitation equipment and powered by a team of dedicated therapists and consultant rehabilitation physicians that are able to deliver and enhance patient care and expedite success.
