Keeping Our Hands Clean

Our hands are among the most valuable things we possess. With it, we can hold and manipulate objects, giving us control over the environment. It is through our hands that we interact with our surroundings, allowing us to carry out a variety of actions ranging from simple tasks such as eating, to complicated ones such as typing on a computer.

Because our hands are used for so many things, they can also pose a danger to us.  This is because many infectious diseases, such as flu and salmonella, can be spread through germs that come into contact with us. While we may be careful about what we touch, these micro-organisms are small and invisible to the eye, and can be anywhere – whether you are indoors or outdoors. This is why it is important to maintain hand hygiene – to kill or remove the germs that may be dangerous to our health.

Careful Cleaning

For a proper wash, follow the following steps:

  1. Rinse your hands to clear it of large, easily removed dirt.
  2. Apply soap, which removes disease causing organisms. If your soap causes skin irritation, consider changing to a soap which is gentle on your skin.
  3. Rub your hands and make sure to scrub all surfaces. Don’t forget the back of your hands, the wrists and between the finger and under the nails. If you wear rings and watches, remove them before washing or make sure to wash under them, as harmful micro-organisms may be hiding underneath them.
  4. Rinse well to remove all traces of soap. Use running water, as standing water can be contaminated after use.
  5. Dry your hands and any accessories on your hands such as rings and watches. A moist and enclosed environment is the perfect place for harmful bacteria and viruses to grow

As your hands are so important, you need to take good care of them, and keeping it clean is just the start. Proper hand hygiene protects us from common diseases and allows us to lead a healthy lifestyle.
